Three players who defined an era. Kompany the captain and warrior, Silva the magician who made everyone around him better, De Bruyne the greatest midfielder English football has ever seen. All three wore the sky blue with honour, passion, and brilliance.
Vincent Kompany joined Manchester City from Hamburg in August 2008 for just Β£6 million β one of the greatest pieces of transfer business in the club's history. Born in Brussels to a Congolese refugee father, Kompany embodied everything a football captain should be: commanding, intelligent, brave, and possessed of an unshakeable desire to win. He started his career at City in defensive midfield before finding his natural home at centre-back, where he became one of the finest defenders of his generation.
At 6'1", Kompany combined imposing physicality with exceptional reading of the game. He could snuff out danger before it developed, was fierce in the challenge, and commanded his backline with authority. But beyond the defensive qualities, he was a leader in the truest sense β the kind of player whose mere presence on the pitch raised the performance of everyone around him.
The Title Decider vs. QPR (May 13, 2012) β City trailed QPR 1β2 with seconds left. In the stands and watching at home, millions of Blues prepared for heartbreak. Then Edin DΕΎeko equalised, and Sergio AgΓΌero struck in the 94th minute. Kompany, as captain, had kept heads together on and off the pitch all season. The first title in 44 years was won.
The Goal vs. Leicester (May 6, 2019) β With City needing a win to stay ahead of Liverpool and just three games left, Kompany β a defender β picked the ball up 30 yards from goal and unleashed a thunderous rising drive into the top corner. It won the game, effectively won the title, and was the defining image of the Domestic Treble season.
The Domestic Treble (2018β19) β In his final season, Kompany lifted three trophies β completing the unprecedented Domestic Treble. The FA Cup final against Watford ended 6β0 β he was immense at the back. Days later, he announced he was leaving to become player-manager of Anderlecht. He left at the very top.
Breaking the Winless Record (2011β12) β City went 13 league games without conceding with Kompany marshalling the defence. His partnership with Vincent Zabaleta, Pablo Zabaleta, and various centre-back partners evolved across the years, and he consistently produced his best for the biggest games.
Kompany is Manchester City's greatest ever captain. He was there for the start of the Abu Dhabi era β a figure of continuity between chaos and greatness. His statue outside the Etihad is deserved. In later years he managed Anderlecht (taking them to the Belgian league title) before returning to City as manager in 2024 following Pep Guardiola's departure β a fairytale return for a man who never truly left. He is, simply, a Manchester City legend.
Kevin De Bruyne joined Manchester City from Wolfsburg in August 2015 for B£55 million. Chelsea had sold him for B£18 million two years earlier, barely giving him a chance. At City, under Pep Guardiola's system that maximised his qualities, KDB became unequivocally the greatest midfielder in Premier League history β possibly the greatest midfielder in the world during his peak years.
His passing range is from another planet. De Bruyne could switch the play 60 yards with pinpoint accuracy, thread through-balls between defenders with mathematical precision, or arrive late from midfield to finish with either foot. His vision was elite β he saw passes that didn't yet exist. His work rate without the ball was exceptional. His shooting, often underrated, produced some of City's most memorable goals. He won the Premier League Player of the Season award twice (2019β20 and 2021β22) and was runner-up multiple times.
20 Assists in 2019β20 β De Bruyne equalled Thierry Henry's Premier League assist record β 20 in a single season. Some of those assists were things defenders didn't even know they'd been beaten by. He won the Premier League Player of the Season award comfortably. In a title-winning season for Liverpool, City's brightest light was KDB.
The 100-Point Season (2017β18) β De Bruyne was the fulcrum of City's record-breaking campaign. His pressing, his creativity, his reliability at the highest level β game after game of extraordinary quality. The record 100 points would not have been possible without him.
Champions League Final (2021) β Pep controversially left De Bruyne on the bench against Chelsea in Porto. He came on in the second half β and was excellent before suffering a horrific fractured eye socket and nose in a collision. City were beaten 1β0. In 2023, he made amends in Istanbul β his passing and vision a constant threat to Inter Milan.
The Treble (2022β23) β In City's greatest ever season, De Bruyne was its heartbeat. Despite battling hamstring injuries, he played in every major match that mattered and, alongside Rodri and Haaland, lifted the Champions League, FA Cup, and Premier League.
De Bruyne left Manchester City for Napoli in the summer of 2024 β an almost unfathomable departure, though entirely on his own terms and with the club's blessing. He left as the second-highest Premier League appearance maker in City's history (277, behind only David Silva) and 24 PL assists clear of Silva for the club's all-time leader. He is the greatest player in Manchester City's history.
David Silva arrived from Valencia in July 2010 for B£24 million and immediately became one of the most technically brilliant players the Premier League had ever seen. Small (5'7"), compact, and deceptively quick, Silva operated between the lines β always available, always creative, always making the team better. He was the team's Spanish connection for a decade, a player who made the difficult look effortless and who raised City's collective intelligence with every touch.
Silva was the conductor of Manchester City's football under both Roberto Mancini and later Pep Guardiola β the only player to bridge both eras completely. He wore the number 21 shirt and became synonymous with the sky blue. His dribbling in tight spaces, his awareness of teammates' runs, his ability to draw fouls in dangerous positions, and his close control in midfield were all world-class. He is Manchester City's all-time appearance leader in the Premier League with 309 games.
The Title-Winning Years (2012 & 2014) β Silva was instrumental in both Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini's title-winning campaigns. In 2011β12, his creativity unlocked defences throughout the season. He scored the vital goal in the final game against West Ham in 2014, helping seal the title.
The Pep Revolution β When Guardiola arrived in 2016, many wondered how Silva would fit. The answer: perfectly. Pep repositioned him slightly deeper, making him the pivot between defensive structure and attacking intent. Silva thrived, producing some of his best football in his 30s β a remarkable testament to intelligence over athleticism.
Personal Heroism (2017β18) β Silva's son Mateo was born prematurely with serious health complications in early 2018. Despite spending weeks at his son's hospital bedside in Spain, Silva still appeared for City when his presence was needed, producing world-class performances while carrying unimaginable emotional weight. His teammates and manager have spoken of the moment with profound admiration.
The Farewell (2019β20) β After Kompany's departure, Silva became club captain in his final season. He announced early in the year that he would be leaving. The farewell was cruelly denied the crowd it deserved β the COVID-19 pandemic forced games behind closed doors. His last match was a Champions League loss to Lyon. The Etihad paid tribute in full when fans returned.
David Silva won 11 major trophies with Manchester City β more domestic trophies than any player in the club's history at the time he left. He departed for Real Sociedad in 2020, winning the Copa del Rey with them in 2021. He also won the World Cup and two European Championships with Spain during his time at City β one of the most decorated players of his generation. His statue outside the Etihad β alongside Aguero, Kompany, and Bell β is precisely deserved. Ten years. 436 appearances. One genuine legend.
260 goals in 390 appearances. City's all-time top scorer. The most iconic moment in Premier League history.
The ultimate Pep player. Engine, creativity, and relentless work rate. Won it all in sky blue.
The most prolific scorer in City history per season. 52 PL goals in 2022β23 defies belief.
A Stockport boy who became a City legend. Eight titles. Ballon d'Or runner-up. The definition of loyalty.
